Obituary

Richmond — Gerald “Gerry” Edwin Dackin died August 18, 2023, in Richmond, Virginia at the age of 96. He was born in Toledo, Ohio to parents Willis and Ruth Dackin. After graduating from high school where he played basketball, football, and track, he enlisted in the Navy spending time in the Philippines and Japan toward the end of World War II. He attended Ohio State University where he joined the Theta Tau fraternity. Initially planning to pursue a career in architecture, a position advertised at an employment agency led him into the world of banking for which he lovingly earned the nickname “Uncle Banker” by some of his nieces and nephews. Employed by Ohio National Bank, he graduated from the School of Consumer Banking at the University of Virginia and eventually moved from Columbus to Marysville to serve as President of their branch. It was from that position that he retired in 1980. During his time in Ohio, he served as a trustee on many boards and foundations and was recognized on numerous occasions for the volunteer work he did. A few years after the death of his beloved wife, Marjorie, he moved to Richmond to be near his daughter, her husband, and his two grandchildren. He was able to attend many of their sports and other activities. Still active and healthy in his later years, he also traveled to the Pacific Northwest to visit his other daughter and her husband. While playing bridge, he met and forged a wonderful friendship with Vivian Hiedemann and together he met many of her friends, with whom they socialized and played many more games of bridge together. He enjoyed spending time with her family. Through the years Gerry’s family and friends marveled at his vivid recollections of his life, his quips, and stories reflecting a calm, steady approach with no regrets, assuring us that in his words it was a life “well-lived.” He is survived by his two daughters Debbie Kopetzky (Pe- ter) of Nordland, Wa. and Nancy Davis (Charlie) of Richmond, VA, two grandchildren, Amanda and Conner Davis, both of Richmond, VA and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, June Streeter. Service and burial will be Sept 9th in Circleville, Ohio at 11 am at Wellman’s Funeral Home. Contributions in his honor may be made to the Union County Foundation.  Online condolences can be made to www.wellmanfuneralhomes.com.
