Sam (Edward S.) Shapiro, 82, passed away peacefully at home, Wednesday, November 12, 2025 with family around him. Sam was born December 10, 1942 in St. Louis, MO to Edward L. and Mildred Shapiro. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Bruce, sister Kathryn, and mother-in-law Irene Cantwell. Surviving Sam are his wife of 61 years, Raylene, sons Steven (Megan), Matthew (Tina) granddaughters Breanna (Jaime) and Alexis and grandsons Elijah and Daniel. Sam’s career started by teaching English and Social Studies in Missouri. He then began work for Ralston Purina beginning in Human Resources in Davenport, IA. His roles with Purina transitioned to production, quality control, and plant management for 31 years before retiring. During his career with Purina, the family moved nine times, primarily throughout the Midwest, making many friends and acquaintances. After retiring from Purina, he worked at the Circleville Thomson Consumer Electronic Plant until its closing. As a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, he served as church president and a general board member with various committee roles. He was actively involved in the missions’ trips of the church. He served on the board of Brown Memorial Home representing Trinity. Sam served as a coach of many sports teams the boys were involved in growing up, as well as an Assistant Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts. He loved umpiring youth baseball and softball, and was an avid trout fisherman, passing on that love to his son Steve, while helping to develop a love of tinkering with mechanical things, to both, particularly Matt. Services for Sam will be held at Wellman Funeral Home, Circleville on Tuesday, November 18, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Mark Nodo officiating. Visitation will be on Monday from 4-7 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested in Sam’s name to Trinity Lutheran Church, or a charity of ones choice.
