Mary Susan McDevitt, age 81, passed away on April 6, 2026. She was born on June 13, 1944, in Coshocton, Ohio.

Mary, affectionately known as Susan, spent her later years residing at The Inn at Library Way in Hilliard, Ohio, where she had been a resident since July 2022, previously from Sarasota, Florida. We are profoundly grateful for the wonderful people at The Inn at Library Way and for Care 360 Hospice. We could not have done this journey without them.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert J. McDevitt and Audrey L. (Turner) McDevitt; her baby sister, Patricia; and her cousins Glenda (Mike) Corcoran and Mary Brown.

Susan had a remarkable career in health care spanning more than 32 years. She earned numerous degrees and certifications, including RN, BSN, MS, MBA, NHA, LALA, LHRM, CPHQ, FACHCA, ABQAURP, CLNC, and FAIHQ. A Registered Nurse Consultant and Health Care Consultant early in her career, she graduated the College of Saint Teresa with a BS in 1966; from the Mt. Carmel School of Nursing in 1970; and attended The Ohio State University and Miami University in Florida, where she served as an instructor in Medical/Surgical nursing.

Susan’s career included leadership roles across multiple settings, including outpatient diagnostics, physical practice, acute and sub-acute care, outpatient rehabilitation, clinics, assisted living, home health, long-term care, and hospice. She served three governors in the State of Florida as Executive Community Health Nursing Director and Director of the Office of Trauma—a role that earned her the affectionate nickname “Trauma Mama.” She also acted as liaison for brain and spinal cord programs, neonatal nurses, emergency nurses, flight nurses, physicians’ committees on trauma, trauma nurse coordinators, the Florida Aeromedical Association, Emergency Medical Service providers, injury prevention initiatives, and the CDC/HRSA Advisory Council.

Her contributions extended beyond state service: she directed Nursing and Discharge Planning at the MD Anderson Hospital Tumor Institute, participated in research and grant programs, and after retirement remained active with the LongTerm Care Ombudsman Program and the Medical Reserve Corps for the Department of Health. She was recognized in Who’s Who in Long Term Care and International Nursing. Susan’s career was marked by dedication, leadership, and a lasting impact on the health care profession.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sarasota, Florida.

Susan is lovingly remembered by her extended family, including her cousins: Jack (Carolyn) Pigman, James (Deborah) Pigman, Mike (Peggy) McDevitt, Katie (Eric) Dahlberg, David (Beth) Snow, Amy (Brad) Gilliams, Mollie (David) Osborn, Mark White, Ed Turner, and Robert (Joan) Turner, along with their families.

Susan will be remembered not only for her extraordinary professional achievements but for the compassion, dedication, and integrity she brought to all aspects of her life. Her influence touched countless colleagues, patients, students, and friends. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Care has been placed in the hands of Wellman Funeral Home, Circleville, Ohio. Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 805 Main Street, Coshocton OH 43812 on May 6, 2026, at 10:30 am, with burial to follow in South Lawn Cemetery.
