James Long, Jr.

James Allen Long, Jr., age 73, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 28.

James dedicated many years of service to the City of Columbus Parks Department, where he retired as a Master Arborist. He also proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the Ohio National Guard.

He is survived by his loving mother, Virginia Long; his devoted wife, Michele Shaffer; daughters Melody (Thomas) Chaffin and Daniela (Chris) Dyke; sons Clayton Shaffer and Tyler Shaffer; 15 cherished grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.

James was preceded in death by his father, James Allen Long, Sr.; his brother, David Long; and sisters Cindy and Sherry.

A lifelong fan of the Cleveland Browns, Ohio State Buckeyes, and NASCAR, James found joy in cheering on his teams. He also loved fishing, woodworking, and spending time with his family.

James will be remembered for his dedication, his sense of humor, and his deep love for his family. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, September 2,2025 at 12:30 p.m. at the Fernwood Cemetery.
