Byron Welch

Byron B. Welch went to be with the Lord on September 23, 2026, at the age of 87.

He was born on November 17, 1938, in Circleville, Ohio, to Raymond B. and Helen K. (Hufford) Welch. His father was a United Methodist minister.

Because of his father’s ministry, Byron attended schools in Pickaway Township, Laurelville, Wellston, and Chillicothe. He later attended Otterbein University from 1956 to 1960, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Government.

Following graduation, he was hired by the Pickaway County Board of Education to teach at Walnut Township School, where he taught for seven years. He then joined the faculty of Logan Elm High School, where he devoted 32 years to educating students. A deeply respected and beloved teacher, Byron made a lasting difference in the lives of generations of students through his care, encouragement, and dedication to their education.

After retiring from teaching, Byron continued his lifelong commitment to public education through service on the Pickaway County Educational Service Center Board of Education and the Pickaway-Ross Board of Education. He served on each board for 16 years.

A lifelong member of the Methodist church, Byron’s faith remained a central part of his life. He attended Field of Grace Congregational Church and Emmett Chapel and was most recently a member of Salem Church of Kingston.

Byron also cherished 25 years of faithful marriage with his beloved wife, Sharon. Together, they shared a life grounded in love, companionship, and devotion.

Byron is survived by his wife, Sharon Welch; his daughter, Laura Welch (Mike McCloy); his brother, Damon Welch (Pam Seavolt); his sister, Sara Mousa (Bruce Mousa); his granddaughters, Ireland and Maeve McCloy; and his nephews, Scot Darby, Dan Welch (Shanda Welch), and Dustin Welch.

His children, Laura and Benjamin, loved him deeply and were always proud to call him Dad. Their bond was one of love, admiration, and treasured memories that will remain close to Laura’s heart and honor Benjamin’s memory.

He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond B. Welch; his mother, Helen K. Welch; his son, Benjamin B. Welch; and the mother of his children, Diane K. Welch.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the caring staff and residents of Brown Memorial for the kindness, friendship, and support they shared with Byron. Special thanks are extended to his longtime caregivers, Reagan Cleckley and MacKenzee Cutright, for the compassionate care, kindness, and love they gave him. They loved Byron as family, and their devoted care brought him—and those who loved him—great comfort.

Visitation will be held Monday, September 28, 2026, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Wellman Funeral Home in Circleville, Ohio. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Wellman Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Hitler-Ludwig Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Byron’s memory to Field of Grace Congregational Church, Emmett Chapel, Salem Church of Kingston, or the Emergency Clearinghouse Food Pantry in Circleville.

Byron’s life reflected a deep commitment to faith, his family, education, and his community. He will be remembered for his dedication to his church communities, the students and families of Pickaway County, and the many lives he touched through his teaching and public service.
